Deborah and Erin will cover:

5 Myths about Agents and What You Really Need to Know.  How to know if you’re ready for an agent; benefits of representation; DO’s and DON’Ts of querying; an agent’s submission process, acquisitions, trusting your agent; and, last but not least–tips on polishing your manuscript so it shines.

The Agent/Client relationship : Deborah Warren and Erin Dealey share the insights and delights of their lucky thirteen-year #kidlit journey together—thus far! Agent/client expectations, submissions (and the waiting…), contracts, communication, and the Give-and-Take of a successful, working relationship.

As a special bonus, attendees will have the opportunity to submit to East/West Literary after Agent Day. More details will be given at the event.

Don’t worry if you can’t make it live! A recording will be available for two weeks after Agent Day for everyone who registers before the event!

Deborah Warren is celebrating 20 fabulous years at the helm of East/West Literary Agency. Her clients include both authors and illustrators of picture books such as the Literary Trust of Anna Dewdney (the Llama Llama franchise), NYT-bestselling Gianna Marino (Night Animals/Don’t Let Them Disappear), Cook Prize award-winner Dow Phumiruk (Counting on Katherine), Sendak-fellow Antoinette Portis (Now/Not A Box), and Caldecott honoree Don and Audrey Wood (The Napping House). She represents authors and illustrators–both debut and established–in many genres: board book, concept, novelty, non-fiction, middle-grade and young adult markets, including Ernesto Cisneros’ MG #OwnVoices debut, Efrén Divided (Harper Collins / March 2020). With a strong background in sales and marketing based on her 17 years at Harcourt as VP/Director of Sales, Deborah is a strategist, who strives to formulate long-term goals to not only help each E/W client grow a career, but flourish within that career.

Deborah’s looking to fall in love with character-driven stories with heart, enhanced by a hook, told in a unique, fresh or distinctive way. Her sweet spots: irresistible, spunky picture books, multicultural / diverse books in all genres, and smartly layered, memorable and insightful MG and YA fiction. And she LOVES finding debut talent – in fact, it’s a bit of a specialty for the Agency.

Erin Dealey is celebrating her lucky thirteenth year with East/West Literary. Her picture books include SNOW GLOBE WISHES (Sleeping Bear/ 2019/ Claire Shorrock–with a Kirkus star!) and the forthcoming DEAR EARTH–From Your Friends In Room 5 (Harper Collins/ Fall 2020/ Luisa Uribe); as well as PETER EASTER FROG (Caitlyn Dlouhy Books/ Atheneum/ 2021/ G.Brian Karas.) Dealey’s slush-pile success story, GOLDIE LOCKS HAS CHICKEN POX (Atheneum/ 2002) is STILL in print–along with titles such as K IS FOR KINDERGARTEN (Sleeping Bear/ Joseph Cowman / 2017); GRANDMA’S FAVORITE and GRANDPA’S FAVORITE (+ Spanish editions); and BABIES COME FROM AIRPORTS –all Kane Miller/ Luciana Navarro Powell. School visits have taken her as far north as Alaska, and as far south as Brazil. A former SCBWI RA, she is the PR Coordinator and assistant to Ms.Warren at East/West Literary.
