Morning Workshop: Page-Turning Plotting without all the Plodding (9 a.m. – 12 p.m.)

Having problems constructing your beginning, middle, and end? Need new and simple ways to look at your picture book's or novel's plot so that your manuscript is a page-turner, not a plodder? Learn how to apply practical and practiceable techniques that will help you answer the question: what should happen next? We'll address theme, plot, sub-plot, book structure, chapter structure, scene structure, and more!

Afternoon Workshop:  Crafting the Perfect Pitch: Tips and Tricks to Landing a Contract with Your Query Letter and/or Synopsis (1 – 4:30 p.m.)

Everything you need to know to capture the attention of a children's book agent or editor by getting to the point and making your book sound unrejectable. Get the complete 4-1-1 on the business side of all the stuff that goes "around" your manuscript: the dreadful query and synopsis. Your top questions with be answered in one entertaining and informative session.

About Cynthea  Cynthea Liu Headshot

Cynthea Liu is author of PARIS PAN TAKES THE DARE (Putnam), a humorous mystery novel for grades 4-7. THE GREAT CALL OF CHINA (grades 7-12) is part of Speak’s bestselling S.A.S.S. series.  Her picture book WOOBY AND PEEP (ages 4-8) was released by Sterling in 2013 and was a Barnes and Noble Summer Selection. Her next picture book BIKE ON, BEAR! Will be published by Simon & Schuster in 2015.

Based in Chicago, Cynthea has spoken to a number of schools in Illinois and across the country. She has also been a guest speaker for national conferences organized by the American Library Association, American Association of School Librarians, Association for Library Services to Children, and the Young Adult Library Services Association, among others. Locally and regionally, Cynthea has also spoken for the Illinois School Media Library Association, the Illinois Reading Council, the Illinois State Board of Education, and the Chicago Teacher-Librarians Association.

Cynthea is also a frequent guest author for local family literacy nights and young author conferences.  She is also a writing coach and faculty member for conferences associated with the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and local universities and colleges. She has been featured on ABC’s Chicago 7 and the Chicago Sun Times.

Workshop Costs

Full Day (including deli lunch):

    Member:  $70

    Guest:  $95

Half Day Only (does not include lunch)

    Member:  $30

    Guest:  $45

Credit card or PayPal payment is preferred. If paying by check (made out to SCBWI N. Texas), checks must be postmarked by Monday, Nov. 10 and mailed to SCBWI North Texas, PO Box 1975, Addison, TX  75001. Walk-up registrations will be accepted.

Lunch  Choice of box lunch with chips, cookie, fruit or pasta salad and iced tea will be provided.


The event will be in the Addison Conference Center Stone Cottage just to east of the Conference Center and next to the water tower. Parking is in the attached lot or on the street.


The workshop begins at 8:30 am and concludes at 4:30 pm.  We'll break for lunch around noon.
